He married twice. In the Census of 1851 he is described as widower, living with his sister Rosa, who kept house for him at Deptford. He is described as a clerk - an Inland Revenue Officer. By his second wife Margaret Frances Franklin, whom he married on 18th April 1851 at the High Street Meeting House, Deptford, Kent, he had children:

5 Blanche Marion, born in 1859 at Clerkenwell. She married Leslie McNeil Jacob.
6 Gordon MacIntosh, born in 1861 at Islington, Middlesex. He died 21st May 1889 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
7 Herbert Mouat, born in 1863 at Islington, Middlesex.
8 Ella Roberta, born in 1865 at Islington, Middlesex.
9 Percy Howard, born 4th June 1868 at Stamford Hill, Middlesex.
10 Marion, born in 1871 at Islington, Middlesex.
11 Jessie, born in 1874 at Islington, Middlesex.
Margaret was born in Waterford, Ireland in ca 1830. She died 24th November 1875.
John Michael Beard ended his career as Superintendant of Probate at Somerset House. By 1871 he was living at 9 Highbury Crescent, Islington, London. In the 1851 Census he is described as a clerk, an Inland Revenue Officer. By the 1871 Census he had risen to become superintendant. He was a Plymouth Brethren.
