REVEREND STRANGFORD VIOL
Born 1647 - Died 19th June 1696
He was a son of Henry Viol, Gentleman, of Ashford. He studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, and Magdalen Hall, Oxford, obtaining a BA in 1667 and MA in 1670 and subsequently became master of Ashford School in 1673, a position he retained until he resigned on being presented with the rectory of Upminster, Essex. He was rector of Upminster from 28th March 1679 until his death on 19th June 1696.
He married Jane Fogge, a daughter of Richard Fogge of Dane Court, near Tilmanstone in Kent, a 24 year old spinster at the time; this was on 7th January 1684, the licence dated 3rd January 1684. Described as a Gentleman, widower of Ashford, aged 27, he had however previously been married to a Mrs Mary Carter, born in 1648, of Ashford, at St Mary's Ashford on 8th September 1674. Jane Viol, Strangford's widow, re-married at Tilmanstone on 14th April 1687 William Bray MA, rector of Upminster. Born c 1607, she died 16th March 1719. By Jane Fogge he had two daughters and co-heirs:
