SHIP MASTERS AND THEIR VESSELS , 1200 – 1500

I have always been fascinated by all matters relating to shipping in the medieval period, especially in relation to the Cinque Ports.

In my trawling of the internet I often come across references to mariners and their vessels. I have abstracted basic details for these and will continue to do so whilst doing other research. Perhaps they will prove of interest to others.

The entries relate to payments made by and to masters of vessels. On occasion they give details of a voyage and people carried in the vessel and the purpose of the visit. Please do check out the original source if you want further information. Please bear in mind that entries in the Pipe Rolls were more often than not carried forward for many years until the account was fully settled. Indeed, I have seen some 14th century entries carried forward to the reign of Henry VIII. I will enter the earliest and the latest references found. Therefore earlier ones may yet await discovery, and consequently dates given must be treated with this in mind.

I have had a brief look at the Patent Rolls Online in respect of a number of the names of mariners and vessels, to see whether they appear there. They don't; that is not to say that others won't in the Patent Rolls, or the Close or Fine Rolls for that matter. Similar information may well appear in other classes of documents in the National Archives, for example Miscellaneous Accounts (E 101).

References beginning with E372 are of Pipe Rolls in the National Archives. The number that follows is the roll number and the final number the image number, ‘f’ denoting the front of the membrane, ‘d’ the dorse. These can be accessed through the AALT website. The link to the index page is:

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/IndexPri.html

PR denotes Patent Rolls, NA National Archives. The term Dominus (of a vessel) may refer to its master or owner. It could also be that the vessel was 'leased' for a particular journey or period of time.

Other references to sources will be explained as they occur.
