WILLIAM JACOB
of Folkestone

born ca 1547 - dead by 19th May 1603

I will continue this line for another generation before returing to the descendants of John Jacob, in whom the pedigree continues .For a period there were two or three of this name, but William Jacob, who had been mayor of Folkestone in 1559, had a son William, who lived in the house of his uncle John Jacob. He had a cousin William, who moved to Boughton, so I will assign the following references to William the son of the mayor of Fokestone.

Probate accounts show that a William Jacob of Folkestone had died by January 1584. These accounts show the assets, but more importantly, the liabilities of the deceased. They were usually drawn up shortly after his decease, so as to obviate fraud. They show that William had a son William.
The accounts would appear not to have been wrapped up speedily, as another account of 1592 shows (CKS-PRC2/3/225 & PRC2/6/63). This must relate to the William who was major of Folkestone. He is described as a hardhewer, ie mason, and this would tie in with the payments he received in 1581 (
CKS-PRC2/14/279). He was examined in a town deposition dated 1600, where he is described as of Folkestone and aged 53. He states his father had held lands in Swanton. This would mean he was born c1547. A probate account for this William was drawn up on 19th May 1603, listing his assets and liabilities.

1555 Described as Master Jacob, he was paid for going to Canterbury (Society Genealogists, Churchwardens' Accounts, fo 131d).
1556 For his expenses at Canterbury (ibid, fo 134d)
1556 Again, as Master William he was paid 4d for horsemeat (ibid, fo 135)
1558 He was paid 2s 9d for his charges at Canterbury (ibid, fo 139d)
1562 He was elected sideman for the town and parish (ibid, fo 149d)
1562 The parish sued William Jacob in an action of debt (ibid, fo 152)
1562 He was further charged for fees relating to the above (ibid, fo 154d)
1581 A William Jacob was paid for laying a corbal stone in the wall of St John's Island and materials for the same 3s 8d (Society of Genealogists, Folkestone Churchwarden Accounts, fo187)
1584 His name appears in a rental of Walton manor (CKS-U270/M253)
1588 He witnessed a deed of Thomas Herdson (BL, Additional Charter 68390)
1602 He was a bondor to a marriage allegation, wherein he is described as a hard hewer, of Folkestone.
