JANE SWINTON
Baptized 16th December 1818 - Died 14th March 1853
She was the daughter of Captain Richard Swinton. It is said that her ancestors were granted an estate by Malcolm Canmore for clearing the country of wild boar, hence their crest, 'a boar chained to a tree'. Their ancestor died in 1060, six years before the Norman conquest. That estate remained in the Swinton family for some 800 years before it was sold. The Swintons were often mentioned in Scottish history and by Sir Walter Scott. They were perpetually engaged in the border wars. One of them, a Sir John Swinton, is said to have married a daughter of King Robert II, grandson of Robert Bruce. Another Sir John Swinton married a niece of Robert III. The daughter of a later Sir John Swinton was the grandmother of Sir Walter Scott.
She married Lieutenant-Colonel William Jacob.
