HARRIS BARHAM

Born - Died before 19th February 1768

The son of Thomas Barham of Canterbury, his will is dated 4th December 1749, and proved 19th February 1768. It would appear that he owned property in Denton, which presumably was Tappington Court, and this he left to his cousin and godson Richard Harris Barham, son of his uncle Richard Harris Barham (sic), and which was in the occupation of widow Hills or of her assigns. He also left him all his property, whether freehold or leasehold, in the county of Kent and in the city of Canterbury. It would appear Tappington was not left in Gavelkind, but to the eldest son, his father Thomas. Kentish custom was for property to be inherited in gavelkind, ie by all children as tenants in common. There was a proviso that should Richard Harris Barham die before he attained the age of 21 then the properties to go to the testator's cousin Sarah Barham, daughter of Richard Barham, and in case she should die before she attained the age of 21 and be unmarried, then the property to go to her sister Charlotte. The residue and remainder of his estate he left to his uncle Richard Barham, who was made executor of the will.
