LEASE

Indenture dated 13th August 1661 BETWEEN Thomas Gorst of London, gentleman, of the one part and Edward Heron of the parish of St Giles in the fields, carpenter, in the county of Middlesex, of the other part... WITNESSETH that the said Thomas Gorst for and in consideration of £25... paid to him by Edward Heron.... as also in consideration of the yearly rents and covenants etc.... HATH demised, granted and to farm letten unto the said Edward Heron... ALL that messuage or tenement with the appurtenances situated in the way or passage leading from the arch or gate in pursefield, otherwise known by the name of Duke Street, it being the corner house leading to certain stables and coach houses lying in the parish of St Giles in the Fields.... and now in the occupation of the said Edward Heron, together with the yard belonging to the said messuage (as it is closed with a brick wall and the use of the pump thereto belonging)... and likewise the said Thomas Gorst has by these presents demised and to farm letten one other small piece of ground adjoining to the way or passage leading from Duke Street to certain coach houses and gardens there containing in length from east to west 34 feet of assize, and in breadth at the east end 1 foot of assize or thereabouts, and in breadth at the west end 16 feet of assize, and abutteth north upon the brick wall, enclosing the gardens of Richard Parr and John Goodwine south, upon a way leading from Duke Street to the said gardens east, upon or towards the yards belonging to the before demised premises, and west upon a little alley set out for a passage from Richard Parr’s garden unto the said way leading from Duke Street aforesaid.... TO HAVE AND TO HOLD... from the feast day of the Nativity of St John the Baptist last for the term of 21 years....YIELDING AND PAYING yearly the rent of £26.....

Indenture dated 9th November 13 Charles II (1680) BETWEEN Elizabeth Southerton of the parish of St Martin in the Fields, in the county of Middlesex, widow, one of the daughters of Anne Gorst, late of the said parish, widow, deceased, of the one part, and William Hall of the said parish, cordwainer, and Elizabeth his wife, sole daughters of the said Elizabeth Southerton, of the other part.... WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of 5/-.... she the said Elizabeth HATH bargained and sold.... unto the said William and Elizabeth all that the undivided 1/3 part of her the said Elizabeth Southerton, the whole in three equal parts divided.... of and in all those 4 messuages, tenements, grounds lying in Parse alias Lincolns Inn Fields, in a place there called Duke Street, in the parish of St Giles in the Fields.... now or late in the several possessions or occupations of James Baubor, Margaret Richardson, widow, Samuel Spike and Robert Fletcher.... and in all those 2 pieces of ground enclosed with brick walls.... in the possession of Richard Bishopp.... LETTERS CLOSE

Know all by these presents that I Thomas Dowle of London, Brewster, have received this day from Lady Joan de Ferous Lady Groby 9/6 in full payment of all debts.... due to me and by the same owed in the principal manner up to this date by the hands of Robert Esyngwald, which 9/6 my brother paid to the said Lady Joan her heirs and executors... I appose my seal.

John Rowbothome of London, haberdasher, on of the children of William Rowbothome the elder, one of the natural sons of Dorothy Tatton of London, widow, deceased.... WHEREAS William Rowbothome the younger of Upminster in the county of Essex, gentleman, by a recognisance on the nature of Statute Staple dated 28th August 3 Elizabeth....before Sir John Allott, knight, mayor of the staple at Westminster and William Fleetwood, sergeant at law and recorder of the city of London, acknowledged himself bound in the sum of £1000 unto the master and brethren and sisters of the gild and fraternity of the honour of the blessed Mary the virgin of---- (the remainder of this deed is lacking).

Bill of Sale by Samuel Quinton, citizen and carman of London, by and with the direction and consent of William Sparrow of Tooley Street, in the parish of St John, Southwark, in the county of Surrey, victualler, in consideration of £93/15/0 paid to William Sparrow and 10/- paid to Samuel Quinton, they have granted, bargained and sold to Richard Cleaver.... all that carroom No 118 whereunto the said Sam Quinton was admitted by the President, Treasurer and Governors of Christ’s Hospital, London, in trust for William Sparrow, as appears by their order dated 22nd June 1782, in the room and place of Robert Boston, late citizen and carman of London, deceased... TO HAVE AND TO HOLD to Richard Cleaver to his own use.....

PARISH OF ST ALPHAGE, IN THE CITY OF LONDON 17th century

Quitclaim by William Gibson of the parish of St Dunstan’s in the West of London.... in consideration of 20/- to ------ of all that piece or parcel of ground with the appurtenances whereupon stood four messuages or tenements before the late dreadful fire in London, lying and being in Philip Lane, in the parish of St Alphage, in the city of London, abutting upon Philip Lane on the east, and the dead wall on the west, and upon ground of ----- Foster on the south, on a parcel of ground belonging to the Company of Curriers on the north, which said premises were of the occupation of Mrs Elizabeth Nicholas, deceased.... TO HAVE AND TO HOLD.... forever.

LEASE

Indenture dated 1st September 1778 BETWEEN The Trustees of the Rugby Charity founded by Lawrence Sheriff, grocer, of London of the one part, and Mathew Dungan of New Ormond Street, in the parish of St Andrew Holborn, in the county of Middlesex, gentleman, of the other part WITNESSETH that in consideration of £25 the trustees have bargained, demised, leased and to farm let to the said Mathew Dungan all that messuage or tenement being No 3, situated on the north side of New Ormond Street aforesaid, abutting east on a messuage of the said Trustees, in the occupation of Mr Peter Roke, and west on another messuage of the said Trustees, leased to the said Mathew Dungan, and in the occupation of William Gatty, which said premises are now in the tenure of John Burgess.... and are situated in the parish of St Andrew Holborn... at a yearly rent of £6....

On the dorse of the document is engrossed another deed:

By William Harrisson of Lambs, Conduit Street, in the county of Middlesex, esquire, and Joseph Brooke, of Theobalds Road, near Lambs, Conduit Street, coachmakers, executors of the last will and testament of the within named Mathew Dungan.... WHEREAS the within named premises were on or about 19th March last past put up for public sale, and John Ricketts of Canon Street, in the city of London, cheesemonger, appeared to be the highest bidder for the same for the price of £220, and accordingly paid into the hands of the auctioneer the sum of £44 part thereof by way of a deposit... KNOW YE that the said William Harrison and Joseph Cooke in consideration of the sum of £42 so paid and in consideration of the sum of £176 to them now in hand paid.... HAVE granted, bargained and sold, transferred, set over etc all the said messuage and tenement etc TO HAVE AND TO HOLD unto the said John Ricketts for the remainder of the term due....

Indenture dated 28th February 1788 BETWEEN William Stokes the elder of the parish of St Anne Limehouse, in the county of Middlesex, surveyor, and William Stokes the younger of the same place, surveyor of the first part, and Joseph Philpot of Camden, now in the parish of St John Hackney, in the county aforesaid, stock broker, of the other part WITNESSETH that in consideration of 5/- they have bargained and sold ALL that messuage, tenement etc in the parish of St Ann Limehouse on a street there called St Anne’s Street on the west side thereof, numbered 4 and now in the occupation of John ----- (sic), abutting on the east on St Anne’s Street, on the west on ground belonging to the said William Stokes and north and south on other premises of the said William Stokes, heretofore called by the name of Sandy field, and also for the use of the pump standing in St Anne Street for the tenants of the said messuage... TO HAVE AND TO HOLD for the term of one full year....

Indenture made 28th January 1841 BETWEEN Joseph Sparrow, late of Limehouse, in the county of Middlesex, victualler, but now of Lea Cottage in the parish of St Leonard Bromley, in the county of Middlesex, gentleman, of the first part, Thomas Barton of Limehouse, gentleman, of the second part, and William Baker of Limehouse, gentleman, of the third part and Frederic Brown of London, gentleman, of the fourth part WITNESSETH that in consideration of £78 paid to Joseph Sparrow by Thomas Barton HE DOTH absolutely direct, limit and appoint ALL that messuage on the west side of St Anne’s Street Limehouse in the parish of St Anne’s, being No 1, heretofore in the occupation of Joseph Orgar, but now of Mary Freick TO HAVE AND TO HOLD for the term of 500 years...

Indenture BETWEEN the Master and Wardens of the Guild or Fraternity of the Body of Christ of the Skinners of London of the one part, and James Thomson of Fenchurch Street, in the city of London, seeds man of the other part.... WITNESSETH in consideration of the rent and of covenants hereinafter reserved and contained they the said Master and wardens have demised and leased unto the said James Thomson.... ALL those two messuages or tenements and premises situated in Fenchurch Street, at the corner of Rood Lane, being Nos 24 and 25, and also all those two messuages or tenements and premises adjoining Rood Lane, being nos 30 and 31, and also all that messuage or tenement or warehouse in Rood Lane being No 29, the whole of which messuage etc... are in the parish of St Gabriel Fenchurch Street, London, as the same are more particularly delineated in the plan thereof drawn in the margin of these presents... TO HAVE AND TO HOLD... unto the said James Thomson.... from 25th July 1850 for the term of 21 years.... YIELDING AND PAYING therefore at or in the common Hall of the said guild.... commonly called Skinners Hall the yearly rent of £420, by four equal payments...

Indenture made 15th November 1878 BETWEEN James Sharman of No 3 Underwood Street, Mile End, in the county of Middlesex, gentleman, of the first part, James Lyons of No 13 Mill Yard Passage, Leman Street, Whitechapel, in the county of Middlesex, labourer, of the other part WITNESSETH that in consideration of £90 he the said James Sharman HATH assigned unto the said James Lyons.... ALL those two messuages, viz No 1 Mill Yard, Leman Street, and No 1, Mill Alley, Leman Street, in the parish of St Mary Whitechurch AND ALL that messuage at No 1 Bowens Building, London Terrace, Cannon Street Road, in the parish of St George in the East TO HAVE AND TO HOLD for the residue of a term of 28 years...

WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of £20 paid to Thomas Gorst by Anne Gorst..... he HATH demised, granted, bargained and sold.... all those messuages ansd tenements with all and every their appurtenances in the parish of St Giles in the Fields and St Clements Danes in the county of Middlesex, and now or late in the several tenures or occupations of Richard Parr, Margaret Richardson, widow, John Goodwine, junior, Edward Heron, victualler and Simon Hameksfeid, gardener... TO HAVE AND TO HOLD... for the term of 500 years....

Indenture quadripartite dated 18th May 1763 BETWEEN Robert Harley of Lincoln’s Inn, in the county of Middlesex, esquire, and James West of the parish of St Mary Paul Covent Garden, in the said county, esquire, being the surviving trustees nominated and appointed in and by one indenture quadripartite dated 2nd August 1737 for purposes therein mentioned of the first part, Her Grace Margaret Cavendish Duchess of Portland of the second part, William Franks of the parish of St Anne Westminster in the said county, surveyor, of the third part, and William Weston of the parish of St Mary le Bone otherwise Marybone in the said county, carpenter, of the fourth part WITNESSETH as well as for and in consideration of the charge and expense which he the said William Weston hath been and shall be at in the new erecting building and completely finishing of the messuage or tenement thereinafter contained, the said Robert Harley and James West have demised and to farm letten ALL that piece or parcel of grounds situate in the parish of St Mary le Bone being part of a certain field or ground called ----- field (sic) viz all that piece or parcel of ground situate on the west side of Wellbeck..... Indenture dated 27th April 11 George I (1725) BETWEEN Robert Hale of the parish of St Martin in the Fields, in the county of Middlesex, gentleman, of the one part, and Christopher Curwen of the parish of St Giles Cripplegate, in London, gentleman, of the other part.... WITNESSETH that for an in consideration of 5/- he the said Robert Hale HATH granted bargained and sold.... ALL that messuage or tenement... situated in White Lyon Court in Charter House Lane, in the parish of St Sepulchre in the said county of Middlesex, heretofore in the tenure or occupation of Elizabeth Clerke, widow, Thomas Everet and George Benson, and now in the tenure of ----- Haynes, widow, Thomas Taylor and Robert Edwards, abutting south on the house how or heretofore in the occupation of Joseph Pinder and Mary Newman, west on the yard now or heretofore in the occupation of George Banks, north on a house now or heretofore in the occupation of George Banks, on the waste of the aforesaid court...
