INHABITANTS OF BOURNE in LINCOLNSHIRE AND its NEIGHBOURING VILLAGES
in the period 1100 - 1500

What follows is a record of inhabitants of Bourne in Lincolnshire and its neighbouring villages. This is taken from a wide range of sources, special emphasis being placed on legal records such as Plea Rolls in the National Archives. These have for the most part not been consulted in any great detail. They will be presented in chronological order and references will be given in each instance so that the original manuscripts may be consulted. This is an ongoing project and additions will be made to this page on a regular basis.

CORAM REGIS ROLL (NA: KB26, Roll No 174) dated 1265.

The abstract below is taken from a Coram Regis Roll of 1265. It lists inhabitants of Bourne and a good many outlying villages who were being sued by William de Morteyn of Dunsby. We have a William Manning as also a Geoffrey Hardy. I mention Hardy because I have a pedigree taken from a Family bible of Hardy of Bourne in 1811. I wonder whether this is the same family. In a plea that they came to the premises of William de Morteyn of Dunneby, cut down trees of his and carried them away to the great damage of the said William and against the (King’s) peace. They did not come to court. The sheriff is ordered to have them in court.... The Bishop of Lincoln is ordered to ensure Ralph parson of Duneby, Peter vicar of Morton and John Chaplain of Repinghale attend court at the next hearing.
