MILES JACOB
Baptized 17th November 1634 - died 1693

 



He was a son of Henry Jacob of Hawkinge and was baptized at Lyminge on 17th November 1634. He married twice. For his first wife he married Margaret Inmith, who died in 1664. They had children:

1 Anne, baptized at Lyminge on 3rd January 1657.
2 Mary, baptized at Lyminge on
3 Henry, baptized 1664, died 1695 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Secondly he would appear to have married Ann King, widow, although in his will he refers to a wife named Margaret. This requires further investigation.

His will was made 20th February 1691, probate being granted 8th August 1693. He left his wife Margaret all his household goods and an annuity of £10 per annum out of lands and a farm in Newington called Comb Lease. To Ann his eldest daughter he gave £50 and to his son Henry 20s. To Miles, the son of his brother Robert £5. The residue of his goods, amongst others bequests, he left to Mary his youngest daughter, whom he made sole executirx, his friend William Brockman being appointed overseer (PRC, 16/327).

A Jurat of Folkestone, he was the second of this family to be mayor of Folkestone, an office he held on four occasions Prior to that we have many references to him.

1663 On 21st July he attended a Brotherhood at Sandwich (Black & White Books of Cinque Ports).
1668 On 21st July 1668, as Mayor of Folkestone, he representated the town at a General Brotherhood at
New Romney . He was committed into the cutody of John Cockman until he pays te propoertion set.

1670 A jurat he attended many meetings at the Fokestone town assemblyover the years (Soc Gen,

1674 He was mayor in this year.
1680 He was mayor in this year, dismissed from his office and subsequently re-elected (ibid)
1683 He represented Folkestone on 24th July at a General Brotherhood and was on the committee drawing
up an address to the King (Black & White Books of Cinque Ports).
1685 As Mayor, he represented Fokestone at a Special Guestling held at New Romney on 31st March
(Black & White Books of Cinque Ports).
1686 He represented Folkestone at a Special Guestling held at Dover on 12th October 1686
(Black & White Books of the Cinque Ports).
1687-8 He represented Folkestone at a Special Guestling held at New Romney on 6th March 1678/8 (Black &
White Books of Cinque Ports).
1691 He represented Folkestone at a General Brotherhood held on 21st July 1691 at New Romney. He was
fined 3s 4d for not attending the call of the house (Black & White Books of the Cinque Ports).
