WILLIAM GUNION RUTHERFORD

Her was born 17th July 1853, and died 19th July 1907. His daughter Elspeth married Edward Arthur Platt, the son of Professor John Arthur Platt. They had no children. Elspeth died in 1968.

He was born in Peeblesshire and educated at St Andrews and Oxford, where he graduated in natural science, with a view to following the medical profession, which he abandoned in favour of a scholastic career. From 1883 to 1901 he was Head Master of Westminster School, and his death deprived classical scholarship in the UK of one of its most brilliant modern representatives. He devoted special attention to Attic Greek idioms and the language of Aristophanes.
